Laura is a Clinical Assistant Professor and member of the Department of Family Practice Clinical Faculty Appointments and Promotions Committee. She has been active with clinical skills instruction and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) since 2016, particularly with the Island Cohort of the UBC Midwifery Program. She enjoys the privilege of getting to know students as they progress through the challenges of early practice, and then working alongside new graduates as colleagues in the community.
Laura has engaged a variety of clinical and educator roles in perinatal care since 2008, when she graduated as a Registered Nurse from the University of Calgary. After completing the Bachelor of Midwifery degree at UBC in 2015, she served the Western Communities of Greater Victoria in a shared care midwifery practice. Currently she provides antenatal midwifery care in a multidisciplinary clinic that welcomes many families who are new to Canada. She retains her love for obstetrical nursing and works as a casual RN on a tertiary care labour and birth unit. Laura has a special interest in educational and workplace features that sustain interdisciplinary perinatal teams. She supports continuing professional development and compassionate care through involvement in coordinating hospital-based rounds. Laura is currently pursuing her research interests on midwifery professional identity through graduate studies at the University of Victoria.
