Policies and Procedures

All UBC Midwifery Program and IEMBP Program students are required to follow and abide by UBC Campus-wide Policies and Regulations, found in the UBC Academic Calendar, and the program policies and guidelines outlined in this section of the website. Students are expected to review and familiarize themselves with these policies and procedures.

UBC Campus-wide Policies of Note:

Summary:

The University provides reasonable and appropriate accommodation for a student who must be absent from classes (including lectures, discussions, tutorials, laboratories, clinical placements, etc.) and scheduled examinations in order to participate in observances of significance in keeping with the practices of the student’s own sincerelyheld religious beliefs and/or the cultural traditions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students.

The University accepts that sincerely-held beliefs by members of the same group may lead to different observance practices.

Documentation from faith or community leaders is not required to support requests for accommodation.

Students are expected to incorporate the deadlines for submission of course work such as essays, reports, and homework/problem sets into their schedules without requesting accommodation.

  1. Accommodations may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    1. setting an alternative date for in-term or final examinations or other in-class assessments that are missed;
    2. providing an alternative assignment for satisfying the course requirement; and,
    3. re-calculating the evaluation scheme to eliminate the component that has been missed.

It is the responsibility of the student to make the request for accommodation to their course instructor or coordinator, their graduate advisor, or the Dean’s Office of their program as appropriate with as much notice as possible (normally 14 days). Reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate such requests. Failure to make a timely request may result in a denial of the request.

Student Code of Conduct

UBC Student Services summarizes The Student Code of Conduct, which sets out the standards of conduct expected of UBC students, which the program echoes. In accordance with the UBC Respectful Environment Statement, all members of this community are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that contributes positively to an environment in which respect, civility, diversity, opportunity, and inclusiveness are valued to assure the success of both the individual and the community. The Student Code of Conduct reflects a concern for these values and tries to ensure that members of UBC and the public can make use of and enjoy the activities, facilities, and benefits of UBC without undue interference from others. The entire Student Code of Conduct is available in the Policies and Regulations section of the UBC Vancouver Academic Calendar under Student Conduct and Discipline

UBC Professional Standards

Please review the Professional standards for learners and faculty members in the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry (2013). These Professional Standards include a standard of conduct “to ensure that all communications on the internet and social media are respectful and meet the same level of professionalism as would be expected in direct or other written communications with and about colleagues, instructors, learners, and patients.”

UBC Faculty of Medicine’s core values underscore the community’s need to ensure communications are free of hate speech, bullying, harassment, racism, and all forms of discrimination, including antisemitism and Islamophobia. Please see the community update from Dermot Kelleher, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Vice-President of Health, UBC, that was sent to all faculty, staff, and students in February 2024.
