POLICY AND PROCEDURE STATEMENTS

Preamble. The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Midwifery Program (BMw) and its Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP) are jointly referred to as “UBC Midwifery” or the “Program”. UBC Midwifery follows all UBC regulatory requirements and applicable UBC policies.

Policy

All courses with the prefix MIDW are required for the Bachelor of Midwifery (BMw) degree except in cases where a request for Course Exemption (year 1/research courses) is approved. Academic performance is reviewed at the end of each term. Students must achieve a grade of 65% in all MIDW courses and achieve a Pass/Satisfactory performance in the clinical portion of each MIDW course at the Final Evaluation, to continue in Good Standing in the Midwifery Program.

A student is in Good Standing when all the following criteria are met:

  • Achieves a cumulative average of 65% in graded courses.
  • Achieves a minimum grade of 65% in all MIDW courses
  • Achieves a Pass/Satisfactory performance in the OSCES, standardized courses including NRP, FHS, ALARM, MESP and ACORN and clinical portion of all courses. A student is required to repeat any failed MIDW courses at the next available offering. Students must withdraw from the Program after a second failure in the same course (theory or clinical) or one failure in any two clinical courses.  Students who are required to withdraw under this regulation are ineligible for re-admission to the Program.

The Midwifery Program reserves the right, at any point during the term, to remove a student from a clinical placement or laboratory setting if the student exhibits unsafe clinical practice or behaviour that places clients or others at risk and/or violates the by-laws of the British Columbia’s College of Nurses and Midwives or the University Code of Conduct. Debarment may lead to the student receiving an “F” grade and may result in dismissal from the Midwifery Program.

The Midwifery Program reserves the right at any point during the Program to terminate the student’s participation in the Program. Although satisfactory academic performance is prerequisite for advancement, it is not the sole criterion in considering a student’s suitability for promotion or graduation. The Program reserves the right to require a student to withdraw from the Program if considered to be unsuitable to proceed with the study or practice of midwifery.

Procedure

Progression in the Program could be impacted by multiple factors. For students not in good standing, all evaluations, discussion, and decisions will be documented by the Course Lead, Tutor and/or Preceptor from week to week.

  1. Course Lead reviews all documentation related to student progression and immediately notifies Undergraduate Program Lead or designate of concerns.
  1. Course Lead or designate notifies student. Where applicable, the student may be asked to stop clinical practice or continuance in course per debarment policy.
  1. Student is immediately connected to the Student Services Manager & Advisor to review relevant policies (i.e. Academic Concession, Withdrawal, Leaves of Absence, Debarment).
  1. Undergraduate Program Lead connects student to Student Services Manager & Advisor for supports and Office of Ombudsperson (https://ombudsoffice.ubc.ca/) if they so choose.
  1. Director of Program notified to review case with Undergraduate Program Lead.
  1. Formal communication sent to student regarding plan with in-person meeting with the Undergraduate Program Lead.
  1. Plan signed by Director/student and filed.
  1. Weekly evaluations will be discussed and shared with the student to show progress or discrepancies.
